Sarah Palin Stirs Discussion of Women in Politics

According to a new survey of American women published in US News and World Report, 79% think that the media went overboard in covering the wardrobe of Sarah Palin.

65% thought women were held to a different standard then men.

But on the positive side, a whopping 93% thought the candidacies of Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton will encourage more women to run for office. 86% said young girls and women in their own lives were inspired by Palin and Clinton.

It is an interesting poll that comes on the day the nation is scrutinizing comments made by Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell about the choice of Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano as Director of Homeland Security.

Rendell said that Napolitano is the perfect choice because she isn't married and doesn't have any children. Rendell said "she has no life" so she can work around the clock.

Would that ever be said about a man? No. Because the assumption is that his wife would take care of the kids and the home.

Rendell made the gaffe in front of an open microphone at the Governor's Conference. Here is Campbell Brown's take on CNN -

Remember the attacks on Sarah Palin that she shouldn't run for office because she has a pregnant daughter and a special needs child at home.

Again, that would never be said of a male candidate.

We are treading on new ground here with more women in positions of political power. You can expect more Rendell like "Gaffes" in the years to come as we all learn to navigate the new political landscape.
