Tina Fey was Sarah Palin was wonderful again on Saturday Night Live.
The skit about the Vice Presidential Debate, the highest rated in history, was the best part of tonight's show. The Presidential election has made SNL relevant again and they know it. This Thursday there will be an SNL one hour Prime Time Special all about politics.
I was wrong. It wasn't Darrell Hammond who ended up playing Joe Biden. It was Jason Sudeikis who was great. He had the big, over used smile down and, as expected, he made fun of Biden complimenting McCain and then ripping him.
At one point he said, "I love him. If I had to spend time on a desert island with just one man, it would be John McCain. But he's deranged."
Queen Latifah played moderator Gwen Ifill, who promised not to ask follow up questions in order to "not to appear biased for Barack Obama in light of my new book, "Breakthrough, Politics of Race in the Age of Obama."
From Latifah as Ifill: "Due to the historically low expectations for Gov. Palin, were she simply to do an adequate job tonight, at no point cry, faint, run out of the building or vomit, you should consider the debate a tie." At that point they showed Tina Fey as Sarah Palin, who winked at the camera.
The real debate at Washington University in St. Louis featured a question about same sex benefits. Fey/Palin had this zinger, playing off Palin's unwed pregnant teen daughter whose marriage to the father of her baby was announced when Palin was tapped by McCain to be his running mate.
Said Fey/Palin, "You know I would be afraid of where that would lead. I believe marriage is meant to be a sacred institution between two unwilling teenagers." A reference to her 18 year old pregnant daughter Bristol who is marrying the teenage father of the baby.
Latifah also asked a question to Biden/Sudeikis about civil unions, the same one Gwen Ifel asked in the debate. And just like in the debate, Biden first answered that a gay couple would be treated no differently than a heterosexual couple. And just like in the debate, Biden contradicted himself in the follow-up when asked, "Does that mean you are for gay marriage?" Biden/Sudeikis said "Absolutely not."
All in all, both candidates and the moderator took their shots. But Fey is so good at her Sarah Palin portrayal, that's all you remember.
I keep hoping for video but NBC pulls it off of YouTube as soon as someone posts it. I'll have it tomorrow. But hen again, it will be everywhere tomorrow.
